Background and Purpose
Student Support Officers (SSOs) play an increasingly central role in responding to diverse student needs, supporting retention, and enhancing the overall student experience within Irish higher education. As student needs become more complex, institutions are challenged to move beyond reactive models of support.
Positioned at the intersection of academic and student services, SSOs advise, support, and empower students across all aspects of their university experience, while acting as a conduit to institutional structures that may feel complex or inaccessible. This presentation draws on practice within the University of Galway to reframe student support as a proactive, relational, and strategically aligned function.
